The University of Auckland: An enduring and transformative partnership
The University of Auckland and the Auckland Medical Research Foundation have a strong partnership that goes back to 1996. This special relationship has enabled major programmes of research that have had immeasurable benefits for the people of New Zealand and beyond.
Through the Foundation’s exceptional philanthropy, hundreds of researchers and their teams (including research teams from around New Zealand) at the University have undertaken studies into health and wellbeing across the lifespan, from before birth to old age. The Foundation has supported work in areas across many departments and disciplines in health and medical research, from Anaesthesiology to zebra fish studies –quite literally from A to Z.
In addition, its funding has launched research careers, supporting emerging researchers to go on to become academic and healthcare leaders, as well as enabling established scholars to be retained in our country.

“The Auckland Medical Research Foundation’s investment in medical research at the University has been transformative and we are extremely grateful to have been its recipient,” says the Deputy Vice Chancellor Research and Innovation for the University of Auckland, Professor Frank Bloomfield (pictured). “In 2025, lifetime contributions from the Foundation have now surpassed $70 million, an extraordinary level of philanthropic support.

“As the Foundation marks its 70th anniversary, we are thrilled to honour and help celebrate this important milestone. We offer special and sincere thanks to the Foundation’s President, trustees, staff and supporters.”
